My truck makes this terrible grinding noise when pulling into my driveway. Is everything OK?
OK, a few of my usual questions.**
What kind of truck? 1986 Toyota 4Runner (22re, 5-speed, A/C, 4×4)
Are the hubs locked when this happens? Yes, I’ve had them locked since the first snow back in November.
Does it make the noise more going left or right? I pull into my driveway turning right, so I notice it more there. I think it’s done it once when pulling in to my driveway going left, but I don’t know.
Does it make the same grinding noise when pulling into a parking spot in a parking lot? I haven’t noticed.
Do you notice any similar grinding noise or clicking when turning corners? I don’t believe so.
Diagnosis by phone: 95% sure this one is just dry steering stops. Originally they have little plastic caps on them to decrease the amount of friction. These are known to wear out and then it’s metal to metal. What a wonderful sound.
Final diagnosis: Yes it was the steering stops that were worn out.
Solution: Put a dab of grease on each of the 4 and then check them every oil change (approximately 3000 miles).
**Why all the questions: On this particular problem I wanted to determine of there was a possibility that one of the CV joints was bad and was grinding when turning the wheels at full lock. I asked some of these questions because it’s winter and the lock-out hubs are locked making the CVs turn all the time.
