108K on a Toyota, too much?

Jakarta How many miles do you think I could get out of a 2002 Tacoma SR5 4×4? Found one in I like, but it already has 108,000+. Will it last forever like it’s Lexus cousins?

As far as Toyotas go, well … if proper maintenance is taken I’ve seen them in the 300K+ range. I commonly see them in the 200K+ range.

The first 4Runner I bought had 188K on it. We sold it a few years later with 224K on it and it was still going.

One of my customers has a 1992 4runner with 337K on it. This is the second engine, first one was replaced at ~270K because the headgaskets were leaking and it was under a SSC.

Those two were the 3.0l engine which was probably one of the less desireable Toyota engines.

The 2002 Tacoma SR5 4×4 more than likely has the 3.4l V6. When I worked at the local dealership this was probably the favorite engine of techs. Very reliable, efficient, easy to work on … in fact, I like this engine so much that I yanked the 3.slow … er … 3.0 out of my 4Runner and put in a 3.4 out of a ’99.

Ask about the maintenance logs. It’s always nice to see the regularity of oil changes and maintenance. If it’s a V6 it should have had a timing belt done at 90K. Toyota recommends that, and I do too. I’ve seen 90K mile Toyota belts go over 110K, but I wouldn’t want to find out what part of the interstate, or back country where it’s going to break. It is common to see the original water pump leaking when doing a timing belt, and I’ve probably replaced water pumps with timing belts on these engines 3 out of 4 times, and I’ve probably done between 50 and 100. This was enough of a problem that Toyota re-designed the water pumps and built a gasket, as opposed to the original use of Fit-In-Place-Gasket (FIPG).

Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything else. Oh yeah. If one is in need of extra power out of these engines TRD makes a real nice bolt on Supercharger that bumps up the power another 50HP. I had the fun of installing about half a dozen of these things. Toughest part was the manditory test drive … gotta make sure everything is back together right.
